BUGATTI CALANDRE

I

In 2019, Bugatti Automobiles and Jacob & Co. entered into a partnership agreement, based on a shared focus on extreme luxury, mechanical performance and craft. Both brands have been working hand in hand, at the highest level, to create unrivaled hypercar-inspired timepieces. This shared mindset led to the creation of the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon in 2020, and the Bugatti Tourbillon in 2024, exceptional timepieces inspired by extraordinary sports cars. Jacob & Co. and Bugatti take their collaboration in a new direction with a new watchmaking format, an exquisite table clock crafted with French crystal maker Lalique. The Bugatti Calandre is a combination of design and historic traits from all three brands.

The Bugatti Calandre references the most recognizable and historically relevant elements of Bugatti design. Chief among them is the legendary Bugatti Type 41 Royale, with two intricately sculpted Dancing Elephants. Created by Rembrandt Bugatti, renowned sculptor and brother of Ettore Bugatti, the animal was the bonnet mascot of that legendary car. These graceful creatures are leaning symmetrically toward each other, a style that defined numerous Lalique clock designs. The name Calandre, is a nod to Bugatti’s French roots and translates to radiator grille. This ties it back to the horseshoe grille Bugatti vehicles are famous for. Above the grille details sits the Bugatti Macaron, with its deep red color known to car lovers and collectors all over the world.

From a creative concept to design inspiration. To the first stroke of a pencil through hundreds of iterations. A timepiece like no other comes to life. The Bugatti Calandre incorporates Bugatti's history, Lalique craftsmanship and Jacob & Co. high watchmaking skills.

The crystal case of the Bugatti Calandre is handcrafted in Lalique’s workshops in eastern France. Founded in 1922, it's home to techniques refined over decades to achieve unmatched clarity and brilliance. The process involves meticulous casting, cooling, and hand-finishing by expert artisans, ensuring that each piece meets the highest standards of quality. The intricate frosted and polished surfaces enhance the depth and dimension of the sculpted elephants, bringing them to life through light and shadow.

Jacob & Co. developed Caliber JCAM58 specifically for the Bugatti Calandre. The 189-component movement is designed around a vertical flying tourbillon. Historically, this complication was created to enhance accuracy in clocks and watches that remained in a fixed, vertical position. In the Bugatti Calandre, the tourbillon serves its original purpose once again.

Celebrating the past and present glory of Bugatti, basking in the finely crafted crystal sculpture from Lalique, the Bugatti Calandre is a testament to Jacob & Co.'s dedication to merging the worlds of high watchmaking and artistic craftsmanship.
