August 28, 2024
Jacob & Co. continue its mission to explore and innovate in the realm of horological complications, introducing a new and advanced version of the iconic Oil Pump watch to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Originally released in 2019, the Oil Pump timepiece captivated with its intricate automaton, depicting an oil derrick. Now, this horological marvel has been reimagined with cutting-edge updates that enhance its functionality and design, while staying true to its roots.
The Oil Pump remains a testament to Jacob & Co.’s unrivaled ability to weave compelling narratives through watchmaking automatons. The centerpiece of this creation, the oil derrick, still performs its mesmerizing bobbing motion, replicating the operation of an actual derrick. This dynamic animation, now controlled by a pusher at 1:30 o’clock, lasts a captivating 35 seconds, bringing the watch to life on demand.
In a significant leap forward, the new Oil Pump features the exclusive Jacob & Co. Manual-Winding JCAM53 caliber, boasting 450 components. The watch is equipped with a single-axis flying tourbillon, achieving a full revolution in 60 seconds. This refinement, while reducing the complexity to a single axis, allows for a more compact and wearable form factor without compromising the watch’s captivating visual appeal.
The redesigned case has been thoughtfully reduced from 49.5mm to 44mm in diameter, and the height from 20mm to 18mm, making it more comfortable on the wrist while preserving its bold appearance. The use of 18K rose gold and sapphire, along with a unique domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, underscores the luxurious craftsmanship synonymous with Jacob & Co.
Every element on the dial has been meticulously crafted and hand-finished, transforming the oil extraction scene into a work of art. The hour and minute indicators are elegantly displayed with Roman numerals, surrounded by rose gold-plated derricks, barrels, and pipelines. The watch’s functionality is further enhanced with a 72-hour power reserve, displayed creatively through a pressure gauge motif.
Limited to just 88 pieces, the new Oil Pump stands as a beacon of Jacob & Co.’s dedication to horological excellence and innovation. By modernizing the form factor while maintaining the essence of the original, Jacob & Co. continues to lead the category of automaton watches, blending tradition with the future.
