Story

Mystery dials, timepieces where the indicators seem to be floating over the dial, are part of the grand history of watchmaking, going back about 200 years when it was first invented by a clockmaker who was also a practicing magician and illusionist. Jacob & Co. has brought the mystery back with an innovative, contemporary high watchmaking and high jewelry twist.

The Mystery Tourbillon Rainbow combines high watchmaking; a world first with two linked central, back-to-back triple axis tourbillons; and high jewelry craftsmanship, with a rose gold case paved with multicolored sapphires. The sophisticated and ground-breaking Mystery was more than one year in development.

Twin Triple-axis Tourbillons

Two triple-axis tourbillons positioned back-to-back in the center of the dial present an inspiring mechanical and visual effect while maintaining the accuracy of the JCAM32 movement. Most tourbillons are either set at the 12 or 6 o'clock position. Jacob & Co. is the first watchmaker to place two triple-axis tourbillons in the center of the watch. The twin complications turn simultaneously at 60 seconds for the first axis, and two minutes each for the second and third axis.

Mystery Time

In hindsight it seems logical that the mystery dial was invented by a watchmaker who was also a practicing magician and illusionist. The approximate 200-year-old complication in which the watch hands appear to float on the dial while keeping accurate time appears magical. Jacob & Co.'s interpretation of the mystery dial involves colored gems that cover two discs, one for the minute and one for the hour. A diamond on each gem-covered disc is used to indicate the time - secretly, mysteriously.

Special Gemsetting

The 50mm 18K rose gold case, lugs and inner ring of the Mystery Tourbillon Rainbow are set with 312 multicolored sapphires and diamonds totaling more than 24 carats. The minutes disc is set with 119 multicolored sapphires totaling more than 9.60 carats and the hours disc is set with 143 multicolored sapphires totaling more than 8.50 carats. A diamond on each disc indicates the hours and minutes.

It took approximately four months to source the colorful sapphires in complementary hues and another six weeks for a master artisan to set the gems. Sapphire's hardness, which almost compares to diamonds, and their assortment of colors make them idea to use for this watch.

Case

The 50mm, 18K rose gold case and lugs are completely paved with multicolored sapphires. There is no crown. Instead, the watch is set and wound by two bows that lift out of the case back. The front and back of the case are protected by anti-reflective sapphire crystals. Even with the abundance of the gems the watch is water resistant to 30 meters.
