STORY

The Astronomia is the embodiment of 21st century ultra-high-end watchmaking and a globally recognized symbol of Jacob & Co watchmaking expertise. A world-first both in the boldness of its unprecedented concept and its entirely mechanical construction, the Astronomia has gone beyond impressive horological achievements to becoming an outstanding multidisciplinary engineering accomplishment.

The Astronomia Solar Planets & Constellations features the iconic Astronomia vertical movement that rotates clockwise every 10 minutes. Its three arms carry the differential-driven, self-leveling time display, a rose gold and blue lacquered globe of Earth, and the one-minute flying tourbillon regulating organ. Subsidiary arms on the movement carry three colored gemstones featuring the 288-facet Jacob Cut®. On top of the movement is a 1.5-carat citrine also detailed with the exclusive 288-facet Jacob Cut® that serves as the representation of the Sun.

The Astronomia Solar Planets makes for a beautifully artistic, highly refined and fully mechanical recreation of our solar system.

EXCLUSIVE ASTRONOMIA CALIBER

The Exclusive hand-wound JCAM19 movement of the Astronomia Solar Planets stands out from an exquisite range of Astronomia calibers by being the most compact reiteration of the original, allowing for yet smaller case dimensions as well as redesigned proportions. Composed of 444 components, all finished to the highest standards of haute horlogerie, the Astronomia features two rotating platforms. One comprises the three main arms and subsidiary arms of the caliber, while the other serves as their spectacular, rotating backdrop.

The vertical platform of the caliber completes a rotation around the center of the watch in under 10 minutes, while simultaneously driving the second layer in a counterclockwise direction to add further animation and complexity to this unique take on celestial watchmaking.

CITRINE SUN

On top of the iconic Astronomia movement is a spherical 1.5-carat citrine also featuring the exclusive 288-facet Jacob Cut® that serves as the representation of the Sun.

The Jacob-Cut gem starts out as a much larger rough, up to twice the size as the finished product. You would be hard-pressed to find a diamond or gem dealer willing to do this. Most cut their gems to ensure there's as little waste as possible. Quality is important as well, with clarity being the most prized of the four Cs of diamond quality. If there is any sign of an inclusion the diamond must be scrapped.

The rough diamond is first cut by machine into a spherical shape, near the size of the final diamond. Then the master gem-cutter does his work, shaping the stone by hand and cutting each of the 288 facets while maintaining its shape.

FLYING TOURBILLON

The tourbillon was originally invented to provide improved timekeeping performance for a pocket watch. The Astronomia Tourbillon brings this 200-plus-year-old complication to breathtaking levels of modern refinement and complexity.

The one-minute flying tourbillon of the Astronomia Solar features a delicately decorated cage that encapsulates the balance wheel, hairspring, escape wheel and a number of other crucially important components. This openworked cage not only features the J&Co logo in its architecture, but is only secured from underneath, allowing for an unobstructed and full view at the ultimate refinement of its detailing and operation. It is a constellation of superbly finished components that, when assembled and fine-tuned expertly, allowing the Astronomia caliber to keep accurate time throughout its 48-hour power reserve.

PLANETS

The Astronomia Solar Planets & Constellations carries the spherical gems featuring the exclusive Jacob Cut® of 288 facets: brown smoky quartz, red garnet and purple amethyst. They are set on subsidiary arms of the iconic Astronomia movement and they make a complete rotation every 10 minutes as if they are planets. On top of the movement is a 1.5-carat citrine with the Jacob Cut® that serves as the sun.

CASE & CRYSTAL

The Astronomia Solar Planets & Constellation white gold and black DLC case measures 44.5 millimeters in diameter and 21 millimeters thick between the highest point of its specially curved front sapphire crystal and the lowest point of its case. Its 18K gold case holds a single-piece sapphire crystal window around its periphery, allowing for unhindered viewing of the spectacular caliber and precious gems inside.

DIAL & HANDS

The time display subdial of the Astronomia Solar is driven through an infinitesimal differential system that allows it to always remain leveled and hence perfectly legible, even as the movement's four-armed platform performs its continuous, 10-minute orbit. The black skeletonized titanium dial is hand angled and polished and completed with lacquered indexes. The hands are rhodium finished.

AT A GLANCE

The Jacob & Co. flying tourbillon, time display, and hand-painted magnesium globe and three 288-facet Jacob-Cut gemstones make one full revolution of the dial in 10 minutes, rotating clockwise

The Sun is represented by a a.5-carat yellow featuring the exclusive Jacob Cut of 288-facets

The black titanium celestial dial with starry constellations makes one revolution counter-clockwise, in 10 minutes

With the upper assembly turning clockwise in 10 minutes and the multi-color sapphire-set base holding the planets turning clockwise in 10 minutes, the Astronomia Solar never looks the same way twice
