Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D

The new Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D is a timepiece that seamlessly combines high-watchmaking (double-axis tourbillon movement) with high jewelry elements like the invisibly-set, baguette-cut diamonds on the case and lugs, and the white diamonds, blue and icy blue sapphires set on the base dial, as well as the central Jacob-cut, 288-facet 2-carat Yellow Sapphire.

The Astronomia is the epitome of 21st century haute horlogerie and a globally recognized symbol of Jacob & Co watchmaking expertise. A world-first both in the boldness of its unprecedented concept and its entirely mechanical construction, the Astronomia has gone beyond impressive horological achievements and been regarded as an outstanding multidisciplinary engineering achievement. Re-engineered from the ground up, the Astronomia Solar is the most compact in our peerless collection of Astronomia calibers.

The exclusive JCAM28 caliber of the Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D stands out from the range of Astronomia calibers by being the most compact reiteration of the original, allowing for smaller case dimensions as well as redesigned proportions. Composed of 447 components, this movement is finished to the highest standards of haute horlogerie.

The rotating upper platform of the JCAM28 caliber completes a clockwise rotation around the center of the watch in under 10 minutes, while simultaneously driving the diamond- and sapphire-set base dial in a counterclockwise rotation in ten minutes to add further animation and complexity to this unique take on celestial watchmaking.

The tourbillon was originally invented to be a single-axis, rotating cage secured from above as well as below to carry the regulating organ of a mechanical pocket watch for improved timekeeping performance, the Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D presents this 224-year-old invention in a yet more spectacular way.

The double-axis tourbillon of the Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D features a delicately decorated cage that encapsulates the balance wheel, hairspring, escape wheel and a number of other crucially important components. This open-worked cage not only features the Jacob & Co. logo in its architecture, but is only secured from underneath, allowing for an unobstructed and full view of the ultimate refinement of its detailing and operation. It is a constellation of superbly finished components that, when assembled and fine-tuned expertly, allows the JCAM28 to keep accurate time throughout its 48-hour power reserve.

The upper structure of the Astronomia Solar Baguette 3D holds the flying tourbillon, the blue-lacquered magnesium time display, and rotates clockwise in ten minutes.

Serving as a spectacular backdrop for the upper level is the baguette-cut white diamond- and blue and icy blue sapphire-set base dial that rotates counterclockwise. This makes for a unique coming together of gem-cutting and gem-setting prowess and ultra-high-end watchmaking, as can only ever be experienced in a Jacob & Co creation.

Since its founding in 1986, Jacob & Co. has been at the forefront of high jewelry, specializing in exceptional gems and incredible setting. This continues today as the brand has unrivalled legitimacy in both high jewelry and high watchmaking, and the Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D is a stunning example.

In the center of this timepiece is a two-carat 288-facet Jacob-cut yellow sapphire, while baguette-cut white diamonds are invisibly set by hand on the sides of the 18K gold case, the lugs. On the base dial are set baguette-cut white diamonds, and blue and icy blue sapphires.

The globe is made of blue-lacquered magnesium to ensure consistency in weight, as all three satellites have to weight exactly the same. The globe rotates on itself in 60 seconds

The clean, yet powerful lines of the Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D's case are further amplified by 52 baguette-cut white diamonds, tracing the uniquely complex lugs and highlighting their hollowed-out structure. The case measures 47mm in diameter and 21mm thick between the highest point of its specially curved front sapphire crystal and the lowest point of its case.

Its 18K White Gold case holds a single-piece sapphire crystal window around its periphery, allowing for unhindered viewing of the spectacular caliber and gemstones inside. One's focus on the universe that lives inside the Astronomia Solar Baguette Sapphire 3D is further assisted by the diamond-set open-worked lugs - a minute, yet important detail that drives one's vision towards the center of the timepiece.

The time display sub-dial of the Astronomia Solar Baguette 3D is driven through an infinitesimal differential system that allows it to always remain levelled and hence perfectly legible, even as the movement's three-armed platform performs its continuous, 10-minute orbit. The Roman numerals on the skeletonized dial are hand-engraved, while the hand-finished hands appear in gun blue metallic.
