Astronomia Black Dragon White Gold

STORY

When the Astronomia Tourbillon was introduced in 2014, the re-invention of the tourbillon in a vertical orientation and the constant turning of its four satellites garnered most of the attention.

What led to the development of the Astronomia Art Collection, however, is the incredible sapphire crystal and precious metal case, which puts everything on display.

So, the idea was to develop special works of art to put inside the Astronomia Tourbillon, using its massive sapphire crystal case as a gallery, while still showcasing the incredible Astronomia tourbillon movement. The brand started with dragons, octopi, spiders, horses and more. Incredibly successful, Jacob & Co. has expanded the Astronomia Tourbillon Art Collection every year since.

HIGH WATCHMAKING SERVING HIGH ART

The mythical dragon is a magnificent creature, representing strength and power, glory and good fortune. The Jacob & Co. artisan who crafts the dragon in the Astronomia Black Dragon White Gold first does research to find the perfect dragon as source material, then works on the computer to create a detailed 3-D plan. This process takes more than a month, and then the solid 18K rose gold cast is made. Finally, over more than three months, every part of the dragon is gone over with a fine-toothed comb, every surface engraved finished, then polished. The finishing touch? The ruby eyes of this incredible dragon sculpture.

The sculpture is then assembled around the double-axis tourbillon movement, care taken to make sure nothing obstructs the perfect functioning of the watch.

THE TOURBILLON

The tourbillon was originally invented to be a single-axis, rotating cage secured from above as well as below to carry the regulating organ of a mechanical pocket watch for improved timekeeping performance, the Astronomia Black Dragon White Gold presents this 224-year-old invention in a yet more spectacular way.

The tourbillon is widely considered the ultimate complication, as it turns and spins to counter the effects of gravity on the precision of the movement. For the Astronomia Collection, Jacob & Co. has taken the tourbillon one step farther, introducing additional axes in which the tourbillon turns. For the Astronomia Black Dragon White Gold, the tourbillon is double-axis - turning in two axes: one in 60 seconds and the second in 2.5 minutes - and blackened to match the black aventurine base dial, the black magnesium globe, and the 288-facet Jacob-cut black diamond. The dragon sculpture blocks the movement from making its normal tour around the dial.

The base dial is pure black aventurine, designed to look like the starry sky at night.

THE JACOB-CUT DIAMOND

Jacob & Co. has been on the forefront of using precious stones since its founding in 1986, and has developed a number of special cuts and setting techniques. For the Astronomia Tourbillon, the brand developed the 288-facet Jacob-cut diamond.

The Jacob-Cut diamond starts out as a much larger rough diamond, double the size of the finished diamond. First, a rough diamond big enough has to be found, and the purity, clarity, and color has to be of the highest quality both inside and out, and there can be no inclusions. If they start to cut the diamond and find an inclusion, the entire piece will be ruined.

Next, the diamond is cut by machine into a round shape, close in size to the final diamond.

Then, the gem cutter shapes the stone by hand, cutting each individual facet (of 288). This has to be done slowly and carefully, as the stone has to be perfectly round and symmetrical. The danger is that the stone will become oblong and not round. To be used in the Astronomia Collection, the Jacob-cut diamond has to be completely round and weigh exactly as much as the other three satellites (time display, triple-axis tourbillon, magnesium globe).

During the process, if the gem cutter puts slightly too much pressure while adding the facets, too much of the diamond will be cut away, and the ball will end up smaller than the desired diameter. The cutting process takes at least two weeks of dedicated, painstaking work.

To make the final one-carat, Jacob-cut diamond with 288 facets, more than half of the initial rough diamond will be cut away.

The complexity of cutting the 288 facets by hand and making sure everything is symmetrical and the diamond is absolutely round, is what makes the Jacob & Co. diamond used in the Astronomia collection so special.

In the Astronomia Black Dragon White Gold, the one carat Jacob-cut black diamond rotates on itself in 60 seconds.

THE MAGNESIUM GLOBE

The black globe is made of magnesium to ensure consistency in weight, as all four satellites have to weight exactly the same. The globe rotates on itself in 60 seconds.

CASE & CRYSTAL

The case for the Astronomia Black Dragon White Gold measures 47mm in diameter and 21mm thick between the highest point of its specially curved top sapphire crystal and the lowest point of its case.

Its 18K White Gold case holds a single-piece sapphire crystal window around its periphery, allowing for unhindered viewing of the spectacular caliber and dragon sculpture inside.

DIAL & HANDS

The Roman numerals on the blackened and skeletonized titanium dial are hand-engraved and polished, while the hand-finished hands appear in rhodium.
